The City seeks a planning professional prepared to work collaboratively with the City’s executive team and other stakeholders to meet the demands of a community undergoing significant redevelopment and revitalization.

University City is a full-service city providing a range of services including police, fire/EMS, public works, engineering, community development, and parks, recreation & forestry. Water and sanitary sewer utilities are provided by other agencies.

The Director of Planning and Zoning oversees planning and zoning, code inspection and compliance, building inspections, property maintenance inspections and department administration. These services are organized into three divisions: administration, construction and housing services, and planning and zoning.  The Director is responsible for leading a department of 19.6 full-time employees as well as managing a $1.9 million budget. The Director reports to the Deputy City Manager – Development Services.

  • Be comfortable working with an array of stakeholders including elected officials, planning commissioners, City employees, developers, real estate agents, and residents.
  • Have a passion for work in a demanding, rewarding and collegial environment.

Candidates should also have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in urban planning or closely related field.
  • Eight or more years of experience working in a multi-functional regulatory agency servicing the development and construction community, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five – seven years of supervisory experience.
