Are you someone who is interested in developing, organizing, and maintaining all aspects of a multi-year highway programming process? The Program Management Bureau within the Transportation Development Division of the Iowa DOT is looking to hire a Transportation Planner 2 to run the highway programming process and administer other programs. This will include reviewing engineering estimates, updating traffic data, comparing development estimates with programming concepts, updating and maintaining a monitor listing of potential projects and program estimate changes, adjusting funding to account for inflation, and preparing draft programs and developing program alternatives for various funding levels.

Location: Ames, Iowa

 

Shift Requirements: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (flexible schedule), in-person with option for partial telework schedule.  Overnight travel is required sometimes.

 

Preferred experience and qualifications:

  • A strong proficiency with computers and databases.
  • Geographic information systems (GIS) experience. 
  • Work well with people, both team members and external customers.
  • High level of organizational skills and attention to detail

 

You will also be responsible for attending production schedule meetings and other meetings as necessary to compile and develop an accurate highway program. Assisting in administering the Parks and Institutional Roads Program.  Also, ensuring projects are properly programmed and agreements between the Department and other agencies are completed. Perform Geographic Information Systems (GIS) activities within the bureau. Includes assurance that the five-program and State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) can be utilized in a GIS environment. Create five-year program maps used to communicate project information to the public and internal customers. Update Iowa Transportation Improvement Program information on the Department’s website. Assist in the development of State and Federal Funding Forecasts. Assist with compiling various reports for the Federal Highway Administration
