The City of Ames is a thriving community looking for an experienced Planner interested in municipal planning for development review and long-range planning activities. The City is looking to establish civil service lists for the both the classification of Planner and the entry-level Assistant Planner .
The planner will be a team member of the Planning Division and work under general supervision of the Planning and Housing Director. Our planners work independently to implement the City’s development standards, including zoning, subdivision, and other regulations, the City’s Comprehensive Plan, and administration of neighborhood programs. The successful candidate may have a wide range of responsibilities that include working directly with customers on development permitting, zoning, subdivision, code compliance and inquiries; long-range planning, research, and policy development; and representation of the City with neighborhoods or other interest groups.

The targeted hiring range is not to expected to exceed the median of the range of the Planner/Assistant Planner position, depending on qualifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, urban design, or closely related field, and four years experience in private or municipal government planning office, one year of internship may substitute for a year of experience.
- Assistant Planner requires only one year of experience
• Valid Iowa driver’s license
• Must be able to attend various assigned evening meetings such as Planning & Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments, etc.
