Bret VandeLune
Bret is the Director of Polk County Public Works Department. He leads a diverse department consisting of Planning and Development, Water Resources, Housing Services, Air Quality, Engineering and Operations divisions. From 2006 to 2023 he was the Planning and Development Manager at Polk County. Bret has more than 25 years of professional planning experience with city and county government in Central Iowa. Mr. VandeLune is a long-time member of the American Planning Association (APA) and former board member of the Iowa Chapter. He has also been active and is a past president of County Planning and Zoning Officials (COZO). Bret also serves on the Neighborhood Development Corporation (NDC) Board which is a multi-jurisdictional partnership with a mission to enhance neighborhoods and combat community deterioration through redevelopment efforts designed to create opportunities for housing, small businesses and jobs for residents of Polk County. Bret holds a Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Planning form Iowa State University. He is married and had three children. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, snow skiing, hiking, and woodworking.
