The incumbent will have the flexibility to work in the office or a hybrid schedule. The incumbent will be required to report onsite at least once/month but may be required to work onsite more depending on business needs. If working a hybrid schedule, the incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. 

Our Planner Principal Transportation or Planner Senior Transportation position exists to lead and/or support short and long-range planning and research activities for the Metropolitan District, Office of Planning, Program Management, Transit – Planning Section. The responsibilities for this position also include:

  • Reviews, coordinates, and provides responses to local government plans
  • Manages and prepares transportation planning studies
  • Manages and administers consultant contracts
  • Works with large data sets such as the National Performance Management Research Data Set (NPMRDS), INRIS, and Streetlight Insight
  • Develops Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) forecasts
  • Works with various governmental agencies to develop and apply regional policies

NOTE:  This position is being posted at two levels:  Planner Principal Transportation and Planner Senior Transportation.  Interest bids shall be accepted from employees in both classes.  Interest bids shall be considered first from employees in the higher class and if there are no interest bids, shall then be considered from employees in the lower class.  Only one position will be filled.

Here are the Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Planner Principal Transportation:

Two (2) years of advanced professional level transportation planning experience (e.g., Planner Senior Transportation (10L) experience or higher).  Experience must also demonstrate all the following qualifications:

  • Experience identifying needs, determining methodologies for analysis of data, preparing recommendations, leading public participation, and monitoring funding needs and financial resources.
  • Knowledge of planning practices and procedures and related analytical methodologies sufficient to formulate study design and direct the work of consultants and interdisciplinary task forces.

Education: 

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in planning, geography, urban studies, sociology, political science substitutes for six (6) months of advanced professional transportation planning experience.

Minimum Qualifications Planner Senior Transportation: 

Three (3) years of professional level transportation planning experience (e.g., Planner (5L) experience or higher).  Experience must also demonstrate all the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation planning.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) sufficient to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data.
  • Ability to learn and work with large data sets such as the National Performance Management Research Data Set (NPMRDS), INRISX, Streetlight Insight, Inc., and their analytical platform to conduct transportation analyses. 

Education: 

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in planning, geography, urban studies, sociology, political science substitutes for one year of professional transportation planning experience.
