The Program Management Bureau, within the Iowa Department of Transportation, is looking for a Transportation Planner 1.  This small, yet essential part of our organization, is looking for someone who will recognize and be inspired by the opportunity to develop, organize, and compile all programming pieces in Iowa’s 5-year program plan all while by promoting the growth and betterment of Iowa’s transportation system!    

What you will need to succeed in this position: Strong computer and database skills are required. Thus, a strong proficiency with computers and databases is required along with geographic information systems (GIS). You must be able to work well with people, both team members and external customers. Organizational skills and attention to detail are a must.

Your daily responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Reviewing engineering estimates, updating traffic data, comparing development estimates with programming concepts.
  • Updating, and maintaining a monitor listing of potential projects and program estimate changes, adjusting funding to account for inflation, and preparing draft programs and developing program alternatives for various funding levels. 
  • Attending production schedule meetings and other meetings as necessary to compile and develop an accurate highway program. 
  • Compiling program information from various offices within the Department and updating several highway program data bases. Databases include Oracle, Access, Excel, and Masterworks.
  • Assisting administering the Parks and Institutional Roads Program. 
  • Ensuring projects are properly programmed and agreements between the Department and other agencies are completed.
