Part-Time Assistant Community Organizing Planner

Astig Planning is an Iowa City- based start-up planning company focused on creating community solutions to our changing climate through engagement, empowerment, and advocacy. Our team is looking for an Assistant Community Organizing Planner who will be responsible for assisting community planning projects focused on racial, social, and environmental justice. The ideal candidate will have the strong ability to coordinate and collaborate in highly time-sensitive projects with a team, as well as have the initiative and self-discipline to complete independent work.
This position is part-time, starts at $17.50/hour, includes a health care stipend, and averages 20 hours/week with opportunities for growth. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have been working completely remotely and will continue to do so until social isolation requirements and CDC guidelines no longer recommend social distancing.
Responsibilities and Duties
Work directly with the CEO & Founder and Community Organizer Planner in community engagement activities
Engage in a community-based setting, networking with multiple stakeholders and leaders
Participate in relevant policy efforts with local, state, and regional leaders
Conduct office and field research, and investigations on demographic, social and physical developments, land use and other community development projects
Prepare charts, tables, maps and other graphic materials to illustrate findings and recommendations, and present studies, reports and findings
Give briefings and make presentations to clients, the public, and other stakeholders
Prepare public outreach materials and assist at public meetings, the ideal candidate will have experience leading public outreach
Assist with writing reports, planning documents, papers, and other documents
Required Skills
Strong desire to work with people
Combination of accredited degree and 1+ years of relevant work experience, OR in lieu of formal educational training, 3+ years of relevant work experience.
Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, sociology or related field.
Relevant work experience in community engagement (Community/Labor Organizing, Non-Profit/Non- Governmental Organization, Political Campaign, Deep Volunteerism).
Strong writing and research skills
Project management and problem-solving skills
Strong speaking and computer skills, including video and tele-conferencing platforms, and experience with MS Office Suite and Google Workspace
Preferred Skills
Bi/multi-language ability
Graphic Design skills, proficiency in Adobe suite or similar software
Previous experience organizing and/or community engagement in Iowa
Administrative skills
